Melnikov Valery


Was born in Nevinnomyssk, Stavropol Krai, studied journalism in Stavropol, Russia. Devoted his entire conscious life to photography. The first photo-printing took place in the school days on pages of the city newspaper. After serving in the ranks of the armed forces enrolled in the Department of Journalism of the Philological Faculty of Stavropol State University. From the first year had been working as a staff photojournalist in the editorial office of Stavropolskie Gubernskie Vedomosti and as a Stavropol Krai correspondent of Severny Kavkaz Newspaper.

At that time, documented the events that took place in The North and South Caucasus. In December 1999, prepared a photo report about the landing of Russian border guards in Argun Gorge, during the special operation "Argun", a section of the border with the Republic of Georgia within the Chechen Republic was guarded. After that was invited to work in the publishing house Kommersant as a staff photographer. During the work, he regularly covered the events that took place in the North and South Caucasus.

Made special photo-reports about the hostage-taking in Stavropol in 2001, about the terrorists´ capture of the Beslan school in 2004, about the armed conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia.

Covered the events in Lebanon in the midst of the Israeli-Lebanese conflict in 2006.

Took photos of wars in Syria, Afghanistan, Mali, Venezuela.

Had been a regular photographer of Kommersant for 10 years.

Photographer of the international news agency "Russia Today" (since 2009).

Devoted himself to documenting the political and social life of societies in conflict. Valery´s professional biography includes coverage of the Chechen war, the conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia, the Lebanon war in 2006, the Maly Republic insurrection, and the civil war in Syria. In 2014 documented the war in Eastern Ukraine. This work is continued in his current project "The Black Days of Ukraine" about ordinary civilians who became participants in the military confrontation against their will.

Valeriy received many awards for his work, including World Press Photo, Magnum Photography Awards, Pictures of the Year International, Sony World Photography Awards, Visual Storytelling Awards LensCulture. His work was represented in France, Austria, Italy, the United States, Germany, Britain, Russia and other countries.
